Apple Sells 1 Million iPhones in Three Days
Good morrow, mobileteers.
So according to FierceWireless and RCR News and probably every news site out there, Apple sold 1 million iPhones in the opening weekend.
I haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet because I still have a year to go on my Verizon contract (and because I think I’d find myself in an identity crisis without my trusty RAZR). However, as Miss Mobile, I feel I need to have an iPhone. You know, just for the sake of research purposes. (Ahem, Air2Web, I’m dropping a hint here.)
So I didn’t experience waiting in a mile-long line last Friday, but I did see one at Lenox Mall. For you non-Atlantans, the Apple Store is located on the second floor of Lenox Mall. It’s near Corner Bakery (where I frequent for lunch), so I was able to observe the line while enjoying some very yummy Pesto Cavatappi.
The line wrapped around two of the balcony sections that overlook the floor below. There must have been two to three hundred people. Despite the obvious long wait and uncomfortable environment, everyone seemed to be pretty content and settled in: they were reading books, playing with old iPhones, talking with friends, leaning against rails.
For a half second I wondered why they couldn’t wait a day, avoid the line, be patient. But then I realized that’s part of the experience. It’s like waiting in line all night for tickets to your favorite band. It’s like the blackeye from a fight the night before. It’s like paying retail instead of waiting for the sale. Yeah, it blows, but it makes the story all the better and the prize all the sweeter.
And I’m sure they’ll tell you it was worth the wait.

To tell the truth, I do enjoy the experience. I’m a serious apple nerd, so I like talking to other apple nerds to see what kinds of setups they have and what kinds of things they’re doing with their computers. Plus, you can’t really just wait a day, b/c by the next day the entire stock has already been reserved for people who waited the first day after they sold out and put their names on a waiting list. I know one girl who is still waiting to get hers. Oh- and it WAS worth the wait!
