Reaching Gen Y, Obama Style

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Hello everyone. Miss Mobile here. Sorry I haven’t written before now. I’ve been busy saving people from spending too much on their car insurance. No, wait. That’s that other cartoon girl.

So, I’ve been mulling over something all weekend.

I read an article on eMarketer last week entitled, “Young Adults Influenced by Mobile Ads.” Here’s what caught my attention:

Many mobile marketers are still struggling to influence consumers, judging by an analysis of BIGresearch’s “Simultaneous Media Usage Study.”

Only 6.9% of adults surveyed said that video on mobile phones influenced them to purchase electronics; 6.4% said text messaging did the same.

However, mobile media was twice as effective among young consumers, with 14.2% of 18 to 24 year-olds saying that mobile video influenced them and 15.9% saying text messaging did. (more…)

The Mobile Marketer’s Intro to the iPhone

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Spend much time in the halls of mobile companies these days and you’ll be privy to prolific chatter about the second generation of Apple’s precedent-setting iPhone, scheduled for release on July 11th.  Even before the original iPhone was released, back when there were only whispers, smoke and mirrors about Apple’s plans, industry insiders speculated feverishly about when the juggernaut would awaken from its mobile slumber.

By almost all accounts, Apple’s first pass in the mobile space was an unmitigated success. The device was stunningly beautiful, the touchscreen worked surprisingly well, the accelerometer (the doohickey that changes the screen based on the orientation of the device) was an instant benchmark, and the browser served up rich HTML. Undergirding its incredible functionality was Apple’s utter mastery of UI; the device was simpler to use than a preponderance of lesser devices. (more…)

Good news, mobile marketers! According to Nielsen, mobile commerce is picking up!

Call Forwarding, Mobile Banking, and Dead Lizards

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Hello everyone! Hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather yesterday. I know I did, and my skin can prove it. It’s as red as salmonella-contaminated tomato.

I haven’t caught up on my mobile marketing research yet, so instead of informing you of the latest mobile news, I thought I share with you two small tidbits from Miss Mobile’s personal life. (more…)

Gregorio: the Enemy of Mobile Marketing

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

For seven years, I didn’t have a landline phone. As they say in the mobile industry, I had cut the cord. My cell phone and I were free to roam (and believe me, it roamed constantly) across the country. Those were the most telemarketing-free years of my life. Never did I receive a call from a stranger who mispronounced my name and then had the audacity to ask for money. My email may have been full of unwanted solicitations, but my mobile was not.

Until recently. Ladies, gentlemen, I have received text message SPAM. (more…)

Ditch My Trusty RAZR? I Just Might for an iPhone

Have you ever seen a woman suddenly halt in front of a jewelry store window? An exquisite diamond necklace gleaming in the sunlight has caught her eye. She can’t speak it’s so breathtaking. She stands motionless. Her eyes glaze over. Her hand loosens its grip on her purse. She thinks about what she’d look like wearing it, how it would drape over her collar bone, how the diamonds would catch the light as she brushes her hair off her shoulders. In her mind she receives imaginary compliments but shrugs them off modestly. (more…)

Mobile Alert System Brought to You by FEMA

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Miss Mobile here. I was just reading that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said it would be the national coordinator for a “cell phone alert system,” which would, I’m guessing, send mobile alerts to warn people of natural and man-made disasters. I say “I’m guessing” because the article wasn’t very clear about what the system would actually do. (more…)
